“WHEN YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND”

aka “Judge nothing before time”
(1 Corinthians 4:5)

There we have Mary and Martha beside themselves over their brother’s death.

Their brother had died and Jesus had stopped off at Macca’s for a hamburger, seemingly unconcerned about the death of Lazarus.

It was four days before he got there.

Now here’s the thing … according to Jewish tradition, when a person died, his spirit hung around in the sepulchre for three days trying to get back into the dead body.

After that, the spirit cleared off completely.

In addition, according to tradition, the first three days after death. were called the days of weeping, which were then followed by four days of mourning (Genesis 34:8; 27:41; 50:10 and so on).

So Jesus waits till the fourth day after death before appearing, just so everyone knew the significance of the delay … you know … dead is dead is dead is dead!

He was about to demonstrate walking by faith and not by sight with “ … if thou wouldest believe thou shouldest see the glory of God.” (John 11:40)

Mary and Martha: “Jesus how can you be so callous … if you had been here you would not have let Lazarus die!”

Dear Reader, let’s search the scriptures …

Jacob, could not understand how God had let Jospeh be taken to Egypt.
Joseph could not understand how the tempting wife of Potiphar had him put into prison.
Abraham could not understand why God would ask him to sacrifice his son.

And so Dear Reader in your case has it been …

“God, I don’t understand why you let my son be killed?”

“God, I don’t understand why I have been given cancer?”

“God, I don’t understand the twists and turns in my life?”

“God, I don’t understand why my good plans of serving you have been thwarted?
“God, I don’t understand why the blessings I have needed have been kept from me?”

Dear Reader, God does not expect us to understand, but only believe and be obedient.

You do not expect your child to understand … only believe.

Be comforted by this wonderful hymn
that goes like this …

ALL THE WAY MY SAVIOUR LEADS ME

1. All the way my Saviour leads me,

What have I to ask beside?

Can I doubt his tender mercy,

Who through life has been my guide.

Heavenly peace, divinest comfort,

Here by faith in him to dwell!

For I know whate’er befall,

Jesus doeth all things well.

2. All the way my Saviour leads me,

Cheers each winding path I tread,

Gives me grace for every trial,

Feeds me with the living bread.

Though my weary steps may falter,

And my soul a-thirst may be,

Gushing from the Rock before me,

Lo, a spring of joy I see.

3. All the way my Saviour leads me,

O the fullness of his love,

Perfect rest to me is promised,

In my Father’s house above.

When my spirit clothed immortal,

Wings its flight to realms of day,

This my song through endless ages,

Jesus led me all the way.

Dear Reader, truly …

“… For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)
