Israel spent 40 years in the wilderness …
a parable for every unbelieving year spent in the
desert …
plus 1 for good measure!
It’s as if Christ says … “For your rebellion for 40
years I will give you 41 parables that will entertain you … but you will not
understand their meaning … and in addition will add to your judgment.”
“Therefore speak I to them in parables:
because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.”
(Matthew 13:13)
It’s as if Christ says “My parables are a judgment
upon your disobedience, rebellion and unbelief. You have always been that way
and will continue to be so till I open your eyes and ears in the seven year
tribulation … in Daniels’ 70 week” (Zechariah 12:10; Hebrews 12:1)
Christ came to show Israel that he was “… a man
approved of God by miracles and wonders and signs…” (Acts 2:22) but they
rejected him.
As a result, although Christ continues with further
miracles, Christ proceeds to instruct and teach Israel with parables …. lest
they see and hear and be converted … lest they make the connection that Christ
is talking and instructing them about himself.
Christ tells them stories about himself … without
naming himself as the main characters … with ‘parallel’ meanings … eg “There
was a man who had a lot of money and he had six servants etc etc and he went
away and so on.” Christ talks in the 3rd person.
Is Christ being vindicative? … Is he ‘pouring salt
into their wounds’ of unbelief?
Nay! They have
rejected him in the flesh … and so he adds to their judgment … such that greater
will be Christ’s glory with their rescue by him in the seven year
tribulation!
Then, they will truly understand … by having their
eyes opened by God … Israel crucified God himself … God manifest in the flesh
(1 Timothy 3:16)!
Israel will not open its own eyes … as being cast sheep … helpless and hopeless … God will miraculously
do that for them (Zechariah 12:10).
